Brain-fog busting mushroom hot chocolate anyone?
I have this hot chocolate pretty much every day of my working week at 11am or mid-afternoon. Lion’s mane and cordyceps have truly wowed me - whilst I still have my brain fog and fatigued days, this hot chocolate always helps me through. And yes - some days I actually feel amazing on it!
P.S. There’s some uncertainty about caffeine and cacao - from my research, cacao actually contains theobromine. Some cacao beans do contain a v small amount of caffeine ‘typically 1/50th the caffeine of a cup of coffee’.
Brain Fog Busting Mushroom Hot Chocolate Ingredients:
1.5 teaspoons of raw cacao OR for extra richness, raw cacao liquor drops (my personal fav)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon of organic lion’s mane mushroom powder
1/2-1 teaspoon of organic cordyceps
1/2 cup of almond milk + 1/2 of Oatly full fat milk (if coeliac omit Oatly as made in a factory that processes gluten)
Tiny pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon (which helps with blood sugar balancing, and in turn helps to keep hormones stable)
1/4 teaspoon of reishi (optional)
1/2 teaspoon of chaga (optional)
Pinch of vanilla powder or vanilla extra to taste
1 teaspoon of almond butter or nut butter of choice (optional for extra creaminess)
If using nut butter, combine the milk and nut butter in a blender.
Pour into a saucepan. Heat gently. If you have a food thermometer you may want to keep the temp below 42c, this will only be a warm hot chocolate but preserves the nutrients. Mushrooms nutrients become more bioavailable through heat so heating them won’t be a problem, but keeping the temp under 42c preserves the cacao nutrients.
Once at desired temp, take off heat. Add all ingredients and whisk vigorously until smooth.
I make mine without sugar to help keep my pain levels down. This creates a subtly sweet bitter hot chocolate. If you do want to add sugar, unrefined is usually a healthier option.
